The Art of the Upgrade: How to Turn a Good Holiday Into a First-Class One

Timeless travel, whenever wherever.

A first-class holiday is not necessarily the one with the grandest suite or the longest list of extras. It is the one that feels effortless: a room where you sleep deeply, a transfer that saves the wait, a breakfast that invites you to linger. The best upgrades are personal, and often, once you arrive, you barely notice them. You simply feel more at ease.

So before you pay for the word premium, ask a better question: what would make this particular trip better for you?

✨ An upgrade is about position, not just size

A larger room can be lovely. But location may matter more: a higher floor with an open view, a quiet wing away from evening entertainment, or a ground-floor terrace just steps from the garden. Service levels, transfer arrangements and meal options can make an equally meaningful difference.

That’s why the priciest room isn’t automatically the right one. A serene low-rise garden room may suit you better than a tower suite if you value birdsong, easy access to the pool and a little privacy. At a lively resort, a room away from the lifts, bar and family activity areas might be the real luxury.

Think about how you’ll use the space. A junior suite can earn its price when a separate sitting area gives you room to unwind, or when you’re travelling with a child. A club-level room may be worthwhile if its lounge offers useful benefits (perhaps breakfast, refreshments or a quiet place to work) and you’ll make regular use of them. If it’s merely a label attached to a room you’ll scarcely leave, compare the cost with what you’d actually spend on those extras.

“Sea view” and “quiet location” can mean different things from one property to another. Check the room description, view details, floor plan where available, and what is explicitly included. A corner room or an end-of-corridor room may feel more private; an away-from-lift request can help if you’re sensitive to noise. These are usually preferences, not guarantees, so reserve the right category first and ask the hotel to note your request.

🚘 The most underrated upgrade: your transfer

The first hour of a holiday sets its rhythm. So does the last. After a long flight, there’s a world of difference between being met by a driver who knows your arrival time and joining a shared shuttle that waits for several other flights and stops at multiple hotels.

A shared shuttle is often the economical choice. A private car can be worth the extra cost when you’re travelling with young children, arriving late, carrying a lot of luggage, heading to a remote resort or trying to make the most of a short break. For a family or group, compare the total vehicle cost with the combined price of individual seats; the difference may be smaller than you expect. An official airport taxi can also work well, but check the likely fare, queue and onward journey before you land.

Before confirming a transfer, ask what the price covers: return journeys, luggage, child seats, waiting time and flight delays. Share your flight number, confirm the meeting point and save the provider’s contact details. A delayed arrival is far less stressful when you know the driver will track the flight and what happens if the wait runs beyond the included time.

Where available, an upgraded transfer is not about arriving in a flashier car. It’s about stepping outside and knowing the next part is already taken care of.

🍽️ Choose the board basis for how you travel

All-inclusive can be a genuine upgrade for a family spending most days at a beach resort, or for a stay where restaurants are a long drive away. Snacks, meals and activities are close at hand, and you can settle into the holiday without keeping a running tally of every drink and lunch.

For a city break or a food-led destination, bed and breakfast or half board may leave more room for discovery. You can wander out for lunch, find a neighbourhood restaurant and let the evening take its own shape. Compare what’s included carefully: all-inclusive benefits, restaurant bookings, drinks and supplements vary by property.

And don’t overlook breakfast. A good spread, fresh local dishes, attentive service and a table with a view can turn the start of each day into a small ritual. Ask whether breakfast is included, where it’s served and whether you need to reserve a table at busy times.

✈️ When is a better flight worth it?

On a long-haul overnight flight, premium economy may justify its cost if extra space and a more comfortable seat help you arrive rested. Business class can make sense for a long journey, especially overnight, when a lie-flat bed, lounge access and priority services genuinely improve the experience.

On a short, daytime flight, however, a carefully chosen seat may be all you need. Seat selection is often the simplest, most affordable comfort upgrade: more legroom, a preferred location or sitting together. Compare the full price, including baggage, seat fees and change conditions, rather than judging the cabin name alone.

An airline upgrade later is never something to rely on. It may be paid, offered through an official bidding process or linked to loyalty benefits, and availability is not guaranteed. Work out the amount you’d be happy to spend before you travel, then compare it with choosing the cabin or seat from the start.

🕰️ Book the essentials early; stay open to the right opportunity

If a specific room type, family configuration, view or quiet location matters, booking early is usually the safer move. The right room category secures the feature you actually want; a request at check-in cannot promise it.

Flexible travellers may find worthwhile options closer to departure, when availability changes, but late booking is not a route to a guaranteed free upgrade. Upgrades are usually paid or earned through a hotel or airline loyalty programme. A well-connected travel operator may sometimes access suitable rooms or rates at short notice, depending on availability and the arrangements on offer.

At Raheem Tours, we’re used to helping with last-minute plans and weighing up the details quickly. We can check what’s possible, explain the trade-offs and arrange upgrades when available, without promising what no one can guarantee. If you’re comparing a few options, our holiday search is a place to start.

🧳 The little touches that quietly say “first class”

A smooth arrival before your room is ready. Late check-out that gives the final day back to you. A proper welcome, coffee worth drinking, a robe that fits, or a calm pool bed that doesn’t require setting an alarm at dawn.

None of these needs marble or gold. They’re signs that the stay has been thought through, and that your comfort matters. Early check-in and late check-out are subject to availability, so ask in advance whether they can be confirmed, or whether the hotel can offer a comfortable place to freshen up while you wait.

💛 Match the upgrade to the traveller

  • Couples and honeymooners: prioritise a view, a suite with space to unwind, or one memorable private dinner.
  • Families: look for a suitable family room, a kids’ club that fits your children’s ages, food everyone will enjoy and transfers with the right child seats.
  • Solo travellers: choose a safe, well-located hotel and consider a private tour if it adds comfort or depth to the experience.
  • Groups: a villa-style stay or private guide can create both togetherness and breathing space.
  • Business-plus-leisure travellers: lounge access and a fast transfer may be more useful than a larger room.

🧭 If you can upgrade just one thing

As a starting point, consider transfers first, then room position, then board basis, then flights. A transfer can protect precious holiday time; room position shapes every night; the right meal plan supports your itinerary. Flights move up the list for a long overnight journey, a mobility need or any situation where extra comfort will make a real difference.

Then do the honest maths: add the cost of the upgrade to the whole holiday and ask whether you’d still choose it if it weren’t called “premium”.

🗝️ Ask clearly, and watch for upgrade bait

A polite, specific request works better than a vague hint. Contact the hotel before arrival with your booking details: “If available, could you note our preference for a quiet room away from the lifts? We’d also be grateful to know the cost of a confirmed room-category upgrade.” Mention a special occasion if it’s relevant, but don’t expect it to guarantee a complimentary extra. Ask whether an offer is confirmed or simply subject to availability.

Before paying, look closely at what the upgrade actually gives you. A “view” can be partially blocked by construction; a club lounge might offer little beyond a coffee machine in a corridor. Confirm inclusions, location, total price and whether the benefit applies for your whole stay.

Booking through a trusted operator can make the choices easier to navigate: one conversation about your priorities, clearer comparisons and help checking what can be arranged. Explore Raheem Tours’ holidays and tell us what would make your trip feel more like yours.
