January 2027 From the UK: Where the Sunshine Actually Is

January can feel wonderfully decisive. You leave behind dark mornings, arrive beneath a wide blue sky and spend a week remembering how restorative warmth can be.

But “winter sun” means different things. In Europe, it may mean a bright terrace and 20°C afternoons. In Africa, you may find warmer beaches and stronger sunshine. In the UAE, you can combine the sea with extraordinary city life. Further afield, the Maldives and Mauritius offer genuine tropical heat, with peak-season pricing to match.

Here is our honest guide to the best month to travel for winter warmth from the UK, including weather risks, quieter hotel areas, sea temperatures and the destinations that suit different kinds of escape.

Timeless travel, whenever wherever.

Mauritius 28–30°C / 24–25°C 27–28°C 11½–12½ hours Warm but wetter Luxury, tropical beaches

🌋 Canary Islands: the dependable European classic

Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura remain some of the easiest winter escapes from the UK. Expect roughly 19–22°C by day, cooler evenings and around 20–21°C in the sea, refreshing rather than tropical.

Weather is usually reliable, although cloud, wind and temperatures vary by island and coast. Tenerife’s south and Gran Canaria’s south are generally warmer and more sheltered than the north. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura bring dramatic volcanic landscapes and beautiful beaches, but can feel breezier.

For serenity, look towards Costa Adeje, La Caleta, Playa Blanca, Puerto Calero, Meloneras or quieter parts of Corralejo. Choose a low-rise hotel with gardens, a heated pool and distance from the busiest promenades. Adults-only properties work beautifully for couples; family resorts with landscaped grounds are better than large blocks beside nightlife.

Best for short-haul beach holidays, family holidays, winter value and easy all-inclusive breaks. Less suited to anyone wanting tropical sea temperatures or guaranteed hot evenings.

🏝️ Cape Verde: warmer beaches, wide-open space

At around six hours from the UK, Cape Verde offers a genuine alternative to the Caribbean at a lower price point. Sal and Boa Vista typically reach 24–25°C during the day, with evenings around 18–19°C and sea temperatures of 22–24°C.

Rain is rare in January, sunshine is consistent and beaches feel wonderfully spacious. The honest risk is wind: the northeast trade winds can be persistent, particularly on exposed beaches. Sal is ideal for straightforward beach holidays, watersports and all-inclusive resorts. Boa Vista feels more expansive and remote, with long dunes and empty sand. Santo Antão is the choice for walking, valleys and mountain scenery, not a conventional beach resort.

Stay around Santa Maria for restaurants and atmosphere, or choose a low-rise resort outside the centre for quiet gardens, pools and open beach access. Cape Verde suits couples, families and anyone prioritising warmth over extensive sightseeing. It may not suit travellers who dislike wind or want a lively, sophisticated resort town.

🌴 Agadir and Marrakech: two very different Moroccos

Agadir is around 3½–4 hours from the UK, with daytime temperatures near 21°C, evenings that can fall to 8–11°C and an Atlantic sea temperature of roughly 18°C. The long, flat beach is beautiful for walking and the city offers good value, but January is better for poolside sunshine than guaranteed ocean swimming.

Choose a quieter hotel around Founty or the southern beachfront, away from the busiest promenade. Low-rise resorts, gardens and genuinely good Moroccan dining make Agadir a relaxed winter choice.

Marrakech is warmer in the sun than the thermometer suggests, usually 19–20°C by day, but evenings can feel genuinely cold at 5–8°C. There is no beach, of course. Instead, you have riads, souks, rooftop lunches and views towards the Atlas foothills.

Stay in a peaceful riad courtyard or a resort in Palmeraie, ideally with a heated pool and indoor dining. Marrakech is best for culture, food and a short city break; it does not suit anyone expecting guaranteed beach warmth after dark.

🌿 Madeira: mild sunshine with movement

Madeira is a beautiful choice when you want activity with your sunshine. January brings around 18–20°C by day, 13–15°C in the evening and sea temperatures of approximately 19–20°C.

The island is green, dramatic and often more changeable than the Canaries. Rain showers are possible, particularly in the mountains, but they help create the lush landscapes, waterfalls and misty levadas that make Madeira so distinctive.

Choose a calm base around Caniço, Ponta do Sol, Calheta or quieter parts of Funchal. Look for a hotel with sea views, gardens, a heated pool and easy access to walking routes. Madeira suits active couples, solo travellers and curious families. It is not the right choice if your ideal January means lying beside a hot beach every day.

🐠 Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada: the Red Sea value choice

Egypt is one of January’s strongest combinations of warmth, reliability and value. Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada generally see 21–24°C daytime temperatures, evenings around 11–15°C and Red Sea temperatures of 23–24°C.

Rain is exceptionally unlikely. The honest difference is wind: Sharm El Sheikh, especially sheltered areas around Sharks Bay and Naama Bay, often feels calmer. Hurghada offers excellent value and broad beaches, but can feel breezier.

This is where a well-chosen seven-night all-inclusive can make remarkable sense: generous food options, heated pools, snorkelling and easy resort days without constant extra spending. Choose low-rise properties with gardens rather than tower-style blocks, and ask about house reefs, transfer times and evening heating.

Best for families, couples, snorkellers, divers and travellers seeking a reliable beach holiday without a long-haul flight. It may not suit you if you want a walkable old town or extensive independent sightseeing.

🏙️ Dubai and Abu Dhabi: January at its most effortless

January is arguably the best month of the year for the UAE. Dubai and Abu Dhabi usually reach 24–26°C by day, with comfortable evenings of around 15–18°C and sea temperatures near 22–23°C.

The seven-hour flight is longer than a European escape, yet the experience is remarkably easy once you arrive: excellent infrastructure, short transfers, polished hotels, beaches, restaurants and extraordinary city experiences.

Dubai suits a beach-and-city combination, while Abu Dhabi feels more spacious and composed. Consider Saadiyat Island, Yas Island or the quieter Corniche end of Abu Dhabi for refined resorts away from the busiest energy. In Dubai, look towards Jumeirah, Palm Jumeirah or quieter beachfront properties rather than hotels beside the most active nightlife.

Choose the UAE for luxury choices, food, shopping and winter warmth without tropical humidity. It may not suit travellers seeking a rustic hidden gem or a slow, village-like atmosphere.

💎 The long-haul upgrade: Maldives and Mauritius

For guaranteed heat and romance, the Maldives is the clear upgrade. January typically brings 28–30°C days, evenings around 25°C, and sea temperatures near 28°C. It is peak season, so pricing is higher, but the dry-season conditions, private villas and calm lagoons create a very different level of escape.

Mauritius is similarly warm, around 28–30°C, with sea temperatures of 27–28°C. January is humid and falls within the wetter cyclone-season period, so showers are a genuine possibility. The north and west coasts are usually the safer choices for sunshine and shelter.

Both destinations suit honeymoons and luxury holidays. Neither is the best choice for a low-cost last-minute week, although our team can still explore availability when plans change.

📅 When should you book January 2027?

The first week of January is peak season, carrying New Year demand, school holidays and higher prices. If you want quiet pools, better room choice and less pressure on transfers, avoid that week where possible.

The second half of January is often the sweet spot. In the Canaries and Egypt especially, demand softens after New Year, creating better value and more space. This is also when a seven-night all-inclusive can work out cheaper than five nights half-board once meals, drinks and resort extras are included.

Book from October onward if you want the best-located winter-sun hotels, beachfront rooms, adults-only options or specific family facilities. That said, Raheem Tours can still handle last-minute holiday requests successfully: quickly, carefully and with realistic advice on what remains available.

When choosing between warmth and certainty, ask yourself one question: would you rather have 20°C with a shorter flight, or 25°C with more wind and a longer journey? For the most reliable sunshine, look to Egypt, Cape Verde or the UAE. For the shortest easy escape, choose the Canaries. For scenery and walking, choose Madeira.

We look for hotels that are beautiful but never too lively: low-rise resorts with gardens rather than tower blocks, quiet stretches of coast, adults-only choices for couples and food worth staying in for. Where available, we can also arrange upgraded transfers, so your holiday feels smooth from the moment you land.
